Bleach has 366 episodes in its original 2004–2012 TV run, but you do not need to watch all of them to follow Ichigo Kurosaki's main story. If you want a canon-focused first watch, the simplest approach is to skip the pure filler episodes and continue directly into Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War after Episode 366.
Using Anime Filler List's current classification, 163 of the original 366 episodes are pure filler — about 45% of the series. That leaves 203 episodes if you keep manga-canon and mixed canon/filler material.
This guide is designed for first-time viewers who want the main story without constantly stopping to research what comes next. It also separates the filler you can comfortably skip from anime-original material that may still be worth watching later.

Bleach filler list: the episodes you can skip
If you only want the main story, these are the episodes classified as pure filler in the original Bleach TV series:
This guide deliberately keeps mixed canon/filler episodes in the watch route. Those episodes contain material tied to the manga storyline, so cutting them as aggressively as pure filler can make a first watch unnecessarily fragmented.
The fastest canon-focused Bleach watch order
If you want the simplest answer to “what should I actually watch?”, follow this route:
That route keeps every manga-canon episode plus episodes classified as mixed canon/filler while removing the 163 pure-filler episodes.
Should you skip Bleach filler on your first watch?
For most first-time viewers, yes. The filler is not required to understand the manga storyline, and some of the largest anime-original blocks interrupt major canon arcs for dozens of episodes.
That does not mean every filler episode is bad. The more useful distinction is between required viewing and optional viewing. You can skip the filler while following the main story, then return to the anime-original arcs that interest you after you are already invested in the cast.
Bleach filler arcs and blocks explained
The full skip list contains both large anime-original arcs and isolated episodes. These are the major blocks a new viewer is most likely to notice.
Episodes 64–108: the Bount filler block
The first huge detour arrives immediately after the Soul Society storyline. Hulu's own Bleach viewing guide labels Episodes 64–91 as the Bount arc and Episodes 92–109 as Bount: Assault on Soul Society, while Anime Filler List classifies Episodes 64–108 as pure filler and Episode 109 as mixed canon/filler.
Episodes 128–149: shorter anime-original detours
The pure-filler stretches at 128–137 and 147–149 sit around the Arrancar-era storyline. They are much shorter than the Bount detour, but they are still optional if your priority is forward momentum.
Episodes 168–189: New Captain Shūsuke Amagai
Hulu identifies Episodes 168–189 as the New Captain Shūsuke Amagai arc, and the entire range is classified as filler by Anime Filler List.
Episodes 204–214: small filler interruptions
Episodes 204–205 and 213–214 are pure filler. They are easy to remove from a canon-focused watch without losing the surrounding manga storyline.
Episodes 228–266: Zanpakutō-era anime-original material
Anime Filler List classifies the entire 228–266 stretch as filler. Within it, Hulu labels Episodes 230–265 as the Zanpakutō Unknown Tales arc.
This is one of the more interesting detours to revisit later. VIZ explicitly describes the Zanpakutō storyline as anime-original and not based on the manga, while highlighting its exploration of the Soul Reapers' relationships with their manifested Zanpakutō.
Episodes 287–305: isolated late-series fillers
The pure-filler episodes here are 287, 298–299 and 303–305. You can skip them individually without removing the canon episodes between them.
Episodes 311–341: the late Reigai filler block
Anime Filler List marks 311–341 as pure filler. Hulu places the Gotei 13 Invading Army arc across Episodes 317–342, while VIZ's later home-video material describes the conflict with the Reigai forces and Kageroza.
Episode 355: the final pure filler episode
Episode 355 is the last episode in the original run classified as pure filler. Skip it if you are following the canon-focused route, then continue with Episodes 356–366.
Should you skip mixed canon/filler episodes?
We do not recommend it on a first watch. Mixed episodes contain manga material alongside anime-original additions, so trying to remove them turns a simple viewing guide into minute-by-minute editing.
Examples include Episodes 8, 27, 32, 46, 109 and several later episodes. Our watch route keeps these episodes intact.
Where do you resume Bleach after each big filler block?
- After Episode 63, skip the Bount material and resume at Episode 109.
- After Episode 127, skip 128–137 and resume at Episode 138.
- After Episode 146, skip 147–149 and resume at Episode 150.
- After Episode 167, skip the Amagai arc and resume at Episode 190.
- After Episode 203, skip 204–205 and resume at Episode 206.
- After Episode 212, skip 213–214 and resume at Episode 215.
- After Episode 227, skip 228–266 and resume at Episode 267.
- After Episode 286, skip Episode 287 and resume at Episode 288.
- After Episode 297, skip 298–299 and resume at Episode 300.
- After Episode 302, skip 303–305 and resume at Episode 306.
- After Episode 310, skip 311–341 and resume at Episode 342.
- After Episode 354, skip Episode 355 and finish with 356–366.
When do you watch Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War?
Start Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War after Episode 366 of the original series. It is the continuation of Ichigo's story and adapts the concluding arc rather than rebooting the anime.
The official Thousand-Year Blood War website describes the original Bleach TV anime as a 366-episode series and presents TYBW as its concluding arc.
Does Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War have filler?
As of Anime Filler List's October 3, 2026 update, no Thousand-Year Blood War episode is classified as pure filler. The guide currently lists manga-canon episodes plus anime-canon material, but no filler block comparable to the original show's long detours.
In practical terms: once you reach TYBW, you should not approach it with the same “what can I skip?” mindset as the 2004 series.
Do you need to watch the Bleach movies?
No movie is required before continuing from the original TV series into Thousand-Year Blood War. If your goal is the main anime storyline, you can treat the four theatrical films as optional side viewing.
We would keep detailed movie placement out of a first-time filler guide. A dedicated Bleach watch-order page can cover the films, specials and other optional material without making this route harder to follow.
What is the fastest way to watch Bleach?
The cleanest shortcut is simply to remove the 163 pure filler episodes. You do not need to skip mixed episodes, hunt for fan edits or cut individual scenes from otherwise canon episodes.
That leaves a 203-episode route through the original TV series before moving into Thousand-Year Blood War.
Is 2026 a good time to start Bleach?
Yes — especially if the old 366-episode count has been the thing stopping you. A filler-free route makes the original anime substantially less intimidating, and Thousand-Year Blood War is now in its final part.
VIZ currently schedules the final two subtitled episodes of BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity for October 19 and October 26, 2026. That means someone starting Bleach now is beginning the series as the anime adaptation approaches the end of its final conflict.
Where can you watch Bleach?
Streaming availability depends on region. Disney+ currently lists the complete original run through Episode 366 in supported markets, while VIZ also lists streaming and digital options for the classic series.
For Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity, VIZ lists Hulu/Hulu on Disney+ in the United States and Disney+ in select international markets.
