Yes, Dr. STONE: Ryusui belongs to the main story. Watch it after Season 2, Stone Wars, and before Season 3, New World. It adapts the manga's continuation rather than taking a detour into an unrelated adventure, so our recommendation for first-time viewers is simple: do not skip it.

Is Ryusui canon or filler?

The official announcement from December 2021 explicitly describes Ryusui as adapting manga material that continues the story of Stone Wars. That is why calling it filler would be misleading. Its separate release format does not make its events separate from the narrative.

Here, canon means that the special is part of the adapted main storyline; it is not a claim that every animated detail reproduces a manga panel exactly. The practical question is whether it introduces story material you should have before moving on. In this case, it does.

When should you watch Dr. STONE: Ryusui?

  1. Watch Dr. STONE Season 1.
  2. Continue with Season 2, Dr. STONE: Stone Wars.
  3. Watch the Dr. STONE: Ryusui TV special.
  4. Begin Season 3, Dr. STONE: New World.

You do not need a complicated chronological rearrangement at this point in the series. The official New World announcement followed Ryusui's broadcast and identified New World as the third season. Treat the special as the bridge between the two numbered seasons, rather than saving it as a bonus for later.

What does the special add without spoiling it?

The official synopsis introduces a new objective: preparing for a voyage and recruiting a captain with the skills to make it possible. That captain is Ryusui Nanami. The special gives his arrival a place in Senku's expanding plans, instead of asking you to meet him after the preparations are already under way.

There is a useful continuity check in New World's opening-episode synopsis, which already describes Ryusui as having joined the group. You can understand why the special belongs before that starting point without reading the rest of the synopsis or exposing yourself to later developments.

Is Ryusui a movie, an OVA or an episode?

The original release was a TV special. Its June 2022 broadcast announcement scheduled it for July 10 in a 60-minute television slot. That describes the original broadcast presentation; it should not be confused with a promise that every streaming edition has exactly 60 minutes of program footage.

Look for Dr. STONE: Ryusui, the special released in 2022, rather than relying on the character's name alone. Ryusui vs. Senku is a different entry: the official episode page places it in the fourth season. It is not the special you need between Stone Wars and New World. The episode synopsis contains later-story spoilers, so you only need to check its title and season label.

What if you already started New World?

You do not need to restart the entire series. Our recommendation is to pause, watch Ryusui, then return to where you stopped. The point is to fill in the transition you missed, not to turn a straightforward watch order into homework. If you already watched the special under another listing, there is no need to watch it twice.

Where should you look for the special?

Check your service's search results and any specials menu as well as the main season selector. This guide does not promise that Ryusui is available on a particular platform in your country. Our explainer on regional anime availability covers why access to a series does not automatically establish access to every special.
