The recommended JoJo watch order is Phantom Blood, Battle Tendency, Stardust Crusaders, Diamond is Unbreakable, Golden Wind, Stone Ocean, then Steel Ball Run. Follow the story titles in that sequence, even when a streaming service groups them under different season numbers.
This guide covers the modern anime adaptation and its main story route. It uses introductory premises only and avoids the endings of the individual parts, including Stone Ocean.
JoJo watch order at a glance
- Part 1: Phantom Blood - Episodes 1-9 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's first season.
- Part 2: Battle Tendency - Episodes 10-26 of that same first season.
- Part 3: Stardust Crusaders - 48 episodes across the full journey, including the Egypt portion.
- Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable - 39 episodes.
- Part 5: Golden Wind - 39 episodes.
- Part 6: Stone Ocean - 38 episodes; watch every release batch in episode order.
- Part 7: Steel Ball Run - Start with 1st STAGE, then continue into 2nd & 3rd STAGE in episode order as available.
The official franchise episode totals give 190 episodes across the first five anime seasons, covering manga Parts 1-6. VIZ's first-season release guide identifies the opening nine episodes as Phantom Blood; Battle Tendency completes the 26-episode season. Those 190 episodes exclude Steel Ball Run and the optional Rohan stories.
Why JoJo's parts and seasons have different numbers
A part is a major story division of Hirohiko Araki's manga. An anime season is a production or catalog grouping. They do not match one for one because the first anime season adapts two manga parts: Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency.
- Official anime Season 1: Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency, manga Parts 1 and 2.
- Official anime Season 2: Stardust Crusaders, manga Part 3.
- Official anime Season 3: Diamond is Unbreakable, manga Part 4.
- Official anime Season 4: Golden Wind, manga Part 5.
- Official anime Season 5: Stone Ocean, manga Part 6.
- Official anime Season 6: Steel Ball Run, manga Part 7.
That mapping comes from the official anime portal. A service may separate a long story into additional listings or batches. When its numbering looks different, check the story title and episode sequence before deciding that a season is missing.
The main JoJo stories, without major spoilers
1. Phantom Blood
Begin with Jonathan Joestar and Dio Brando. Their conflict establishes the family history that the later stories inherit. Starting here gives returning names and relationships a context that a later part would otherwise expect you to supply.
2. Battle Tendency
Continue directly into Joseph Joestar's story. You are still watching the first anime season, even though the protagonist has changed. That change is part of JoJo's structure: each major story can pass the lead to someone new.
3. Stardust Crusaders, including the Egypt portion
Jotaro Kujo's journey introduces Stands, supernatural abilities associated with their users, as a central part of the series. Some catalogs separate the Egypt portion from the earlier episodes. Keep watching until you have completed all 48 episodes; reaching Egypt is a continuation of Part 3.
4. Diamond is Unbreakable
The focus moves to Josuke Higashikata and the town of Morioh. The setting changes, while established characters and the language of Stand battles carry over. Our recommendation is to arrive here after Stardust Crusaders, with those introductions already behind you.
5. Golden Wind
Giorno Giovanna leads the next main story, set in Italy. Its new central cast makes it look inviting as a standalone starting point, but following the part order avoids having to work backward through references and family history.
6. Stone Ocean
Jolyne Cujoh becomes the protagonist in a story beginning in a Florida prison. Complete all 38 episodes. Streaming batches divide the delivery of Stone Ocean; they are not alternate routes through its story. Avoid explanations of its finale until you have finished it.
Where Steel Ball Run fits in JoJo
Steel Ball Run is manga Part 7 and comes after Stone Ocean in the recommended viewing order. The official manga overview numbers it that way, while the anime portal calls its adaptation the sixth season. Both labels refer to the same story.
Its official opening synopsis introduces Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli in an American horse race in 1890. That earlier historical setting is not a reason to move the series to the beginning of your watch list. Story order and the calendar year inside a story answer different questions.
The official Part 7 introduction presents a new setting and refers readers to the end of Part 6 for more context. For your watch list, the practical distinction is simple: Steel Ball Run follows Stone Ocean in part order, while its own opening introduces Johnny, Gyro and the race. You can understand that starting premise without reading an explanation of Stone Ocean's ending.
Can you start with Steel Ball Run?
Yes, if your immediate goal is to try Johnny and Gyro's race. Our recommendation for exploring the whole franchise remains to start with Phantom Blood. Starting with Steel Ball Run gets you into the story that caught your attention sooner; following Parts 1-6 first preserves the series' progression and gives familiar names and ideas their earlier context.
- I want the main JoJo journey: start with Phantom Blood and follow the numbered parts.
- I only want to try Steel Ball Run right now: start with its 1st STAGE, then continue in episode order. Treat that as sampling this entry, rather than catching up on the earlier parts.
- I finished Stone Ocean: Steel Ball Run is the next numbered main part. No Rohan detour is required.
Watch 1st STAGE before 2nd & 3rd STAGE
Within Steel Ball Run, begin with 1st STAGE and continue into 2nd & 3rd STAGE. These are successive installments of the same adaptation. Netflix's current release information identifies the opening installment as one 47-minute episode and describes a split-cour rollout for the next stage group. A stage label does not establish that the entire Part 7 adaptation is complete.
If stage groups and broadcast breaks are unfamiliar, our guide to cour and split-cour releases explains the terminology. For current Steel Ball Run dates, check the Netflix announcement linked above and your local series listing.
When to watch Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan
Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan is optional for the main viewing route. The official anime portal identifies it as stories centered on the manga artist introduced in Diamond is Unbreakable. Watch it after Part 4 if you want more Rohan, or save it until later. You do not need to insert it between the numbered parts to follow the main protagonists.
Should you skip an early JoJo part?
A change of protagonist does not make an earlier part filler, and an episode about a new opponent is not automatically skippable. For a manageable first commitment, try the 26-episode opening season before deciding how far to continue. The optional Rohan stories can wait.
Where to watch JoJo legally
The official anime portal links Netflix, Crunchyroll and Hulu for earlier JoJo stories and Netflix for Stone Ocean. Netflix also carries Steel Ball Run. Treat those listings as places to check: the seasons, languages and episodes offered can differ by territory. Confirm that your local catalog includes every part of the story you are starting.
